Piston pumps are a type of positive-displacement pumps in which one or more pistons perform reciprocating motion, performing the function of a pumping device. The operating principle of such pumps is the movement of a piston inside a cylinder. This creates a vacuum inside the cylinder, which leads to the supply of liquid or gas to the pump. The piston then moves in the opposite direction, pushing the liquid or gas out of the pump. However, piston pumps are not reversible and cannot operate as a hydraulic motor from a valve timing system.
Axial piston pumps, in turn, work in a similar way, but instead of a piston, a rotor is used. A rotor runs inside the cylinder, which creates a vacuum and forces the fluid to move through the pump. The rotor’s motion changes to force fluid out of the pump. Axial piston pumps are divided into two types: axial plungers and axial pistons.
Plunger pumps use plungers instead of pistons or rotors. The plungers move up and down inside the cylinder, creating a vacuum that forces the fluid to move through the pump. The plungers can also move in different directions to force fluid out of the pump. Depending on the location of the main components, such pumps can be manual or automatic, vertical and horizontal, single-cylinder or multi-cylinder. In general, all these types of pumps perform the same function — moving liquid or gas from one place to another by creating a vacuum inside the cylinder.
