Air ducts are elements of supply and exhaust systems that serve to deliver fresh air masses into the room and remove exhaust air to the ventilation chambers, and then remove it outside. Air exchange can be carried out naturally or forcefully.
Types of air ducts
Air duct pipelines are divided according to several classification criteria:
- cross-sectional shape of air ducts — round, square, rectangular;
- section dimensions;
- materials used for manufacturing — aluminum alloys, galvanized steel, PVC;
- permissible temperature and pressure ranges;
- installation method — external, hidden.
In addition to air ducts, other components will be needed to organize a ventilation system: straight section connectors, corner rotary structures, tees, confusers and diffusers.
Before ordering and purchasing air duct pipes and other components, draw up a detailed plan for the ventilation system.
Types of air ducts according to rigidity, their characteristics
Rigid and flexible air duct structures are divided according to rigidity. Rigid air ducts — metal or plastic — are used in production facilities where high strength and load-bearing capacity are required from ventilation pipes. Metal air ducts are made of galvanized or stainless steel, aluminum alloys using bending machines. These structures are insulated with special thermal insulating materials.
Pipes made of high-strength plastic are produced on extruder lines. Such products are characterized by high strength, rigidity, and durability. The following types of polymer materials are used in its production:
- PVC is an inexpensive, durable material, resistant to ultraviolet radiation, permissible temperature range — 0…+80°C;
- polypropylene — withstands high temperatures up to +100°C, at low temperatures it becomes brittle;
- polyethylene — stable over a wide temperature range from -40°C to +140°C, provides antistatic protection;
- fluoroplastic is a material that is resistant to acidic and alkaline environments.
Advantages of rigid duct systems:
- good aerodynamic characteristics;
- low noise level;
- ease of installation and maintenance.
Flexible ventilation ducts are corrugated reinforced hoses. The strength frame is formed by high-strength steel wire, and the shell is made of laminated foil. The main advantage of flexible air ducts is ease of installation due to the ability to lay the pipe at different angles. Such designs have the disadvantage of a corrugated surface, which reduces the speed of air flow and increases the noise level.
