Level sensors are primary measuring devices used for continuous measurement, as well as monitoring of limit values of the level of liquid and granular media. The values obtained as a result of measurements are transformed into a pulsed current or digital signal of the HART or RS-485 standard.

Areas and purposes of application of sensors

The devices are used in systems for monitoring and regulating the level of media in tanks and pipelines. They can have a standard or explosion-proof design. With their help, the level of: water and other liquids with different viscosities, bulk materials in tanks, silos and pipes is determined. In addition to the main function, level sensors also perform other tasks:

  • generate signals when a level is reached - minimum, maximum or user-specified;
  • measure the volume of media stored in places of complex geometry;
  • measure the speed and amount of flow of the medium;
  • store, process and transmit measured values.

Level sensors are used at oil product supply enterprises, facilities working with water and other liquid media, food products, and bulk construction materials.

Types of sensors

These devices are available in a wide range of designs, principles and operating technologies. Sensors are divided into two main categories - devices designed to work with liquids, and models designed to measure the level of solids. According to functionality there are:

  • signaling devices that give a signal when a specified value is reached;
  • level meters displaying the current value.

The devices can be designed for installation in a container, pipeline, or above the control object. Location – vertical or horizontal.

Based on their operating principle, level sensors are divided into:

  • Continuous measurement membranes. They have a monoblock design and are mounted on the outside of the container.
  • Mechanical floats. Used to determine the level of a liquid medium in an open tank.
  • Hydrostatic. Their operating principle is based on measuring the pressure of the medium at the bottom of the container, which depends on the height of the column above the meter and the viscosity of the medium.
  • Capacitive contact. Design: immersed probe with one electrode, which can be partially or completely insulated. The functions of the second electrode are performed by the tank body.

What parameters are taken into account when choosing a suitable level sensor

Before purchasing a suitable device, determine:

  • the nature of the controlled environment;
  • terms of Use;
  • desired method of transmitting measured data;
  • the necessary functionality of the device;
  • the need for additional elements.
