To determine the magnitude of current and voltage in an electrical circuit, control and measuring instruments with different operating principles are used: electronic, electromechanical, analog or digital. The unit of measurement for voltage is Volt. For convenience, units such as micro-, milli-, kilo-, megavolts are used.

Types of voltmeters and their characteristics

Most often, voltmeters are used as measuring instruments for determining voltage, the operating principle of which is based on Ohm’s law. These instrumentation are divided into two main groups — electronic and electromechanical.

Electronic

These are highly sensitive devices capable of operating over a wide range of values. They require a power source to function. Electronic voltmeters are divided into analog and digital models. Analog instruments are equipped with a scale. When current flows in the forward direction, the arrow deflects to the right, in the opposite direction — to the left. In digital instrumentation, the voltage value is displayed on the display. In terms of measurement accuracy, digital devices are usually superior to analog devices.

Electromechanical

Such devices do not require a power source to operate. These are compact, relatively inexpensive devices. Their disadvantages are the possibility (in some models) of consuming current from the electrical circuit and not a very wide measurement range.

Recommendations for choosing a voltmeter

When purchasing a voltmeter, take into account the specific technical task that it must perform. Possible options:

  • Pulse. Allows you to cope with power outages. With its help, you can determine where the interference is located.
  • Selective. This narrow-band device determines the electrical characteristics of a specific area without turning off other parts. It is used when it is necessary to isolate small sections from the general circuit.
  • Universal. Allows you to determine voltage in different areas and under any conditions.

If you need high technical characteristics, accuracy, a wide measurement range, and mobility is not important, you can purchase a stationary device. Compact mobile devices packed in a neat case are necessary for servicing electrical networks in different places.

Other Voltage Testing Instruments

In addition to voltmeters, multimeters and electrometers are used to measure voltage.

Multimeters

These multifunction devices combine the capabilities of a voltmeter, ammeter, and ohmmeter, meaning they can measure voltage, current, and resistance. Some models perform additional functions: measure temperature, inductance, and determine the performance of diodes.

Multimeters are digital and analog. Digital devices provide easy reading and often have additional functions. Analog — less sensitive to interference, but have lower accuracy compared to digital devices. Multimeters with automatic range selection are the most convenient.

Electrometers

These devices are based on measuring electrical potential and differences in its values. The basis of the design is a rod with two pieces of foil, reliably protected by a metal case. An electrometer is used to determine the presence of charge and potential difference.
